A Garden of Renaissance Inspiration

The Evelyn Gardens form part of the 17th-century gardens created by diarist and landscape designer John Evelyn. Inspired by Italian Renaissance gardens, his design combined structured terraces and water features to link the formal garden with the surrounding parkland.

The terrace walks extend for around a quarter of a mile within 14 acres of pleasure grounds, including a lake and specimen trees. Although some features, such as the canal fed by the River Tillingbourne, have been lost, the surviving terraces, bath house and tunnel remain an exceptional example of early formal garden design in Surrey.
